the train wreck

one of my earliest memories of grandpa is the night that the train derailed by our house in Norwood MO. i was about three or four. i remember being lifted out of bed by dad and being carried with a quilt over my head. it felt really strange. when we went outside, i thought that it must be daytime already because there was orange light coming through the blanket. i remember that when we pulled up to the the big rock house all the lights were on. i remember sitting on grandpa's lap and him asking me if i was cold or scared, apparently i couldn't stop shaking. all i could answer was " yes grandpa" :) for some reason i kept trying to stick my hand in his shirt pocket. he said the big house was strong, and nothing could happen to us there. i remember falling back asleep on his lap sitting in the living room, while he watched the derailment clean- up from the windows.
